Pet Adoption Interview – Aileen’s Experience

If you are considering adopting a dog you may have a lot of questions surrounding how the process works and what you can expect to experience. That’s why we have sat down with pet owner Eileen to quiz her on her dog adoption journey and the reward pet adoption has brought to her life.

Aileen’s Adoption Experience

Why did you decide to adopt a dog instead of buying from a breeder? 

I hate the idea of so many dogs living in rescue centres looking for a home.  I wanted a slightly older, calmer dog so a rescue felt like the perfect choice when looking for a dog to join our family.

Did you have any concerns about adopting a dog before you did so? 

At first, I was nervous about Luna’s personality changing once she entered our home. You never truly know what a dog’s personality will be like once they are living in your home with your family so there is a small risk, but then this is the same when raising a puppy, there are no guarantees.  We have been so lucky that Luna’s temperament was exactly as we expected.  The rescue charity conducted a thorough assessment before we homed Luna to ensure she was the right fit for my family.

What have you found most enjoyable about the adoption process? 

Knowing the life Luna had before and seeing how happy and content she is now in her forever home is wonderful.  I love that I gave her the life she deserved.

What have you found most challenging about the adoption process?

I have a young daughter and rescue charities can be very cautious to rehome dogs with children in the household.  I had to reassure them of my dog-owning experience and how I would manage children around Luna in the house.

What most surprised you about your dog and their personality once you bought them home?  

I have had several rescue dogs and always find it takes about 6 months for them to fully settle and show their true personality. One of the few challenges I had once Luna first came home was that she would bring hedgehogs (alive) in from the garden to the house to show me.  When I spoke to the rescue charity I homed her from they told me they had not experienced this with Luna before. After training Luna for a few weeks this is a behaviour, she no longer exhibits. 

What has been your favourite thing about rescuing your pet? 

My favourite thing about rescuing a pet is seeing them feel comfortable and settled.  Luna is totally at home with me and my household, it’s like she’s been part of our family forever. The bond I have built with Luna is so special and I know our love for one another is mutual.

What impact has adopting a dog had on your life? 

Firstly, I feel grateful I have been able to offer Luna the life that she deserves. Another highlight of adopting Luna is I have been able to teach my daughter the importance of responsible pet ownership alongside how to look after the animals in your care. 

Do you have any tips to help potential dog adopters settle an adopted dog in their home?

My advice would be to give your new pet time to settle, it is a big shock for them to move into a new home.  I always make sure there is a quiet room Luna can retreat to if the family get a bit much.  My study is now called “Luna’s bedroom” as this is her space primarily.  Also, don’t change your usual routine, the quicker your new pet can adapt to your day-to-day life the better.

Would you consider adopting a dog again? If so, why? 

Absolutely.  With so many dogs looking for homes and with the cost of living crisis causing some owners to rehome their pets I wouldn’t consider anything else!
