Worms are parasites that cats can get by accidently eating their eggs. The most common worms in cats are roundworms and tapeworms. Neither of them are good for your cat – they can cause everything from lethargy to a change in bowel habits, as well as weight loss and other symptoms. Your vet will be able to advise you on routine worm prevention which is part of cat care, and the symptoms of worms are easy to spot.

According to Allergy UK, social behaviour has changed andon average, people are now spending around 90% of their time indoors. This brings us into almost constant contact with many of the common things that cause us allergic reactions that live inside our homes – including mould spores, house dust mites – and of course, pet dander. Our indoor environments are often poorly ventilated, causing humidity to rise and creating ideal conditions for mould and house dust mites to thrive in our soft furnishings and bedding. And as a nation of pet lovers, we share our homes with our cats and dogs, which add to the allergens we have to contend with in our day to day lives. Our homes should be our sanctuary, but for 1 in 5the 10-20% of us around the world who are sensitive to cat allergens¹,3², the home environment isn't always so safe and relaxing.

Many cat lovers are searching for an option that will allow them to introduce a cat to their household while minimising their sensitivity to cat allergens. That’s why many believe 'Hypoallergenic'or allergen-free breeds could provide a solution. However, while some hairless breeds are considered to be the ‘best option’ for people with cat allergen sensitivities, technically, there is no such thing as a 100 per cent Hypoallergenic cat.

When it comes to living with a cat allergen sensitivity, it’s not easy, but it doesn’t have to be all or nothing, and you can still live in harmony with your cat. Some of the practices and advice you may find suggested online aren’t feline-friendly and can negatively affect your relationship with your cat. For example, bathing your cat can be a really stressful experience for both of you. Although bathing will lower the levels of allergens present on your cat's hair, the effect is short-lived with the levels returning to baseline within 24 hours of bathing. Similarly, keeping a cat outside, particularly one that has been used to living indoors or keeping them restricted to a certain part of the house, can also result in increased levels of stress for them. Love always finds a way however and there are safe, easy and feline-friendly steps you can take to help manage cat allergies in your home, while also maintaining your close bond with your cat.

Having kittens is a very exciting and emotional time for you and your cat. Before you can welcome bundles of fur into your home, you need to know how to tell if your cat is pregnant, and what you can do to ensure her pregnancy is as happy as possible. It’s important to remember when planning to have kittens that your cat and her litter will have demands that you will need to be prepared to handle. To help you support your pet throughout her pregnancy and labour, we’ve covered everything you need to know about expectant cats. Cat pregnancy Much like us, cats have periods of peak fertility when they can become pregnant - this is known as being in season or in heat. Cats can come into season about once every three weeks, so there are plenty of opportunities for your pet to fall pregnant! If you’d like to avoid an unexpected litter of kittens, we recommend neutering your cat before her first season, as she can become pregnant very easily after that point. As bringing up a litter can be stressful for your cat, and expensive for you, we recommend leaving breeding to the experts if possible. How long is a cat pregnant Cat pregnancy normally lasts between 63 to 67 days, but it can be tough to know exactly how long a cat is pregnant for. The cat gestation period can vary from as short as 61 days to as long as 72 days. Your cat (queen) often won’t show any physical symptoms of pregnancy until she is a few weeks into her term. If you think that your cat is pregnant, take her to the vets for confirmation. If you would like to know how to tell if a cat is pregnant yourself, there are several physical signs that you should be able to spot after two or three weeks have passed. How to tell if your cat is pregnant • After approximately 15-18 days of a cat pregnancy, you may notice that your pet’s nipples become enlarged and red – this is known as ‘pinking-up’. • Similar to morning sickness in humans, your pregnant queen may go through a stage of vomiting. If you notice that her sickness becomes frequent, or she is at all unwell in any other way, contact your vet. • Your queen’s tummy will start to swell, but avoid touching it so you don't risk hurting mom or her unborn kittens. There can be other causes behind abdominal swelling, so monitor your cat closely for any signs of illness and consult your vet if you are worried. • A mom-to-be will gradually gain between 1-2 kg (depending on the number of kittens she is carrying) - this is a strong sign that she is pregnant. • Queens tend to have an increased appetite later in their pregnancy, which will also contribute towards her weight gain. An increased appetite could also be a sign of worms or illness, so double check with your vet to confirm. • Your pregnant cat may act more maternal, meaning that she purrs more and seeks extra fuss and attention from you. • Some vet practices can diagnose cat pregnancy using ultrasound, sometimes as early as 15 days into her term. The vet may also be able to give you an indication of how many kittens your cat is expecting by day 40 of her pregnancy. Bear in mind that in cat pregnancy, a larger kitten can obscure other smaller kittens in the womb, so you could have more kittens than expected!

Tapeworms are parasites that commonly settle in a cat’s bowels. They reproduce by attaching themselves to the gut and breaking into a series of segments containing eggs, which are then passed out with the faeces. Whilst this is unpleasant, it is also easily treatable, especially if you catch the spread of tapeworms in cats its early stages. How do cats contract tapeworms? While tapeworms in cats are a common problem, not many owners know how cats get them. Tapeworms are often contracted when a cat accidentally eats tapeworm larvae. Many types of tapeworm larvae are found in fleas; if a flea is ingested, the tapeworm larvae begins to grow when inside your cat. This is not, however, the only way your furry friend can contract tapeworms. Some cats eat the faeces of infected cats, which can pass on the parasite. It is also possible for mothers to pass on tapeworms to their young. What do tapeworms in cats look like? Tapeworms are long, flat worms that can vary in length. They have a segmented body and a head, which has suckers and hooks to help them attach to the intestine. You’re unlikely to see a tapeworm in this form, though. Once tapeworms begin to grow, segments of their body separate themselves from the main body of the worm. These segments can often be found behind your cat’s tail and look like small grains of rice. You may also see them in your cat’s faeces. Symptoms of tapeworms in cats There are a number of symptoms to watch out for when it comes to tapeworms in cats. The first is to check your cat’s faeces. If they have small white ‘grains’ in them, it’s likely your cat has the parasite. These small pieces will be cream in colour and around the size of a grain of rice. If your cat is regularly licking their anus it could mean they have tapeworms. Similarly, biting or scratching at this area may be a sign. Cats also tend to drag their hind legs across the floor in order to scratch the area; if you see your cat doing this, they may have contracted the parasite. Tapeworms can also cause cats to lose weight. This weight loss may occur even though your cat’s appetite has increased. The final sign to look at for is the condition of your cat’s coat. If your cat has a tapeworm, their coat could become a lot more dull or shabby than usual. If you notice any of these signs it’s important to take your cat to see your vet as soon as possible. If noticed early, tapeworms are easy to treat and get rid of.

Neutering felines means that your cat will avoid any unplanned pregnancies and it can also protect them from certain diseases.
